Speaker Normalization of Fricative Noise: Considerations on Language-specific Contrast

چکیده

Both frication noise and vowel formants cue the place of articulation of sibilant fricatives (e.g., /s/ and /ʃ/ in English). However, only few studies have examined the effect of speaker-specific factors. This acoustic study of sibilant fricatives examines how speaker-specific formant information can improve the distinctness of two phonemic categories of sibilants: /s/ vs. /ʃ/ in French and /s/ vs. /s/ in Japanese. The results show that the center of gravity of the frication noise, normalized with respect to the subject-specific coefficient of vowel onset or vowel center formants, provides an appreciable improvement in the sibilant distinctness in Japanese. While the distinctness score of the noise is generally higher in French than in Japanese, the F2 onset patterns (/s/</s/) are throughout consistent only in Japanese, and strongly improved with a speaker normalization. These language-specific behaviors are discussed in relation with the respective phonological system.

Effects of speaker variability and noise on Mandarin fricative identification by native and non-native listeners.

Speaker variability and noise are two common sources of acoustic variability. The goal of this study was to examine whether these two sources of acoustic variability affected native and non-native perception of Mandarin fricatives to different degrees. Multispeaker Mandarin fricative stimuli were presented to 40 native and 52 non-native listeners in two presentation formats (blocked by speaker ...

INFLUENCE OF VOCALIC CONTEXT ON PERCEPTION OF THE [ J [ s ] DISTINCTION : II . SPECTRAL FACTORS

The posi tion of the category boundary along a synthetic [J J-[ sJ noise continuum depends on the following vocalic segment: When the vowel is [u], more "s" responses are given than when the vowel is [aJ. In Experiment I, we showed that this context effect disappears when the vocal ic portion is synthesized so as to contain no formant transitions. To dissociate the contribution of formant trans...

Noise robust speaker verification with delta cepstrum normalization

This paper introduces a delta cepstrum normalization (DCN) technique for speaker verification under noisy conditions. Cepstral feature normalization techniques are widely used to mitigate spectral variations caused by various types of noise; however, little attention has been paid to normalizing delta features. A DCN technique that normalizes not only base features but also delta-features was r...

Interpersonal Metadiscourse in Newspaper Editorials

The power of media lies in its persuasive function, which gives media a potential to maneuver on the mind of audience (van Dijk 1996). This potential is realized via different linguistic resources, one important group of which is metadiscoursal resources. The major aim of this study was to explore how and in what distribution these resources are employed by writers with different cultural backg...

Influence of vocalic context on perception of the []-[s] distinction

When synthetic fricative noises from a [f]-[s] continuum are followed by [a] or [u] (with appropriate formant transitions), listeners perceive more instances of [s] in the context of [u] than in the context of [a]. Presumably, this reflects a perceptual adjustment for the coarticulatory effect of rounded vowels on preceding fricatives. In Experiment 1, we found that varying the duration of the ...
